Utah Auto Insurance

If you are looking for Utah auto insurance you can find a good rate. You just need to ask yourself some important questions. Once you have the answers to these questions, finding a cheap Utah car insurance policy should be easy.

How Is My Rate Determined?

There are two factors that go into determining what your Utah car insurance rate will be. The first factor is risk. When you are looking for a quote, an insurance company will ask you a series of questions such as: age, marital status, make and model of you vehicle, driving history, and where you live. They will then use all of this information to determine the risk they will assume by giving you coverage. The greater risk you are, the higher your rate will be.

Once this risk is accessed, you are given a rating. It is similar to a 1-10 scale, 1 being low risk and 10 being high risk. Based on this rating, they will quote you a price. It is important that you tell a company all the pertinent information so you can get the best rate possible.

Requirements And Utah Laws

Utah is a no-fault state. Being a no-fault state is meant to discourage lawsuits by giving those who are insured the opportunity to file claims for financial loss to their own insurance company. The insured does not have to prove who was at fault in order to do this. Utah is different from other no-fault states because it requires drivers to meet a minimum dollar amount before a lawsuit over and above financial loss can be filed.

Because Utah is a no-fault state, it is required that you carry at least $3,000 in personal injury protection, also called medical payments coverage. Beyond this, drivers in Utah must carry $25,000 per person for bodily injury, $50,000 per accident for bodily injury (this will increase to $65,000 in January 2009) and $15,000 per accident for property. This is known as a 25/50/15 policy.

Coverage Beyond The Basics

You need to consider what other coverage you may need. Sometimes just meeting the minimum amount required by law is not enough. Collision is one option. It covers the damage to your car if you hit something such as a tree, telephone pole, or another vehicle. Comprehensive is another option. It covers most other causes including fire, weather, vandalism and theft.

If you still have a loan out on your vehicle, you may be required to have additional coverage such as collision and comprehensive until the car is paid off. Check with you loan company or lien holder to see what requirements they have. If you live in a high crime area or an area prone to bad weather you may want to get some of this optional coverage as well.

Find A Utah Insurer

Utah law requires that insurance companies and agents be licensed with the state in order to sell insurance. You can contact the Utah Department of Insurance on the Internet or by phone to get a list of licensed companies. On their web site you can enter in a company and get a result showing if that company is licensed. This is the best way to protect your self from a fraudulent company. Some of the insurance companies that are licensed to sell insurance in Utah are:

  • State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company
  • Farmers Insurance Exchange
  • Allstate Insurance Company
  • Allstate Property & Casualty
  • Bear River Mutual Insurance Company
  • American Family Mutual Insurance Company
